If you are unable to work because you are experiencing a disabling condition, you may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides two programs, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). These two programs have some similarities and differences in qualifying.

Before you apply for Social Security Disability benefits you should gather the information that will be requested by the SSA during the disability application process. Make sure you have the names and addresses of all doctors and clinics you have visited over the last five years. Also, it is important to have your social security number and the social security numbers of your spouse and children.

When filing an application for Social Security Disability benefits, you will also need to fill out the Social Security Disability report form. This report will ask you for information such as your name, address, phone number, the contact information for your treating physicians, dates of treatments, names of any medications that you may be taking and the names of the doctors who prescribed these medications.

While you are not required to hire a Social Security Disability lawyer, hiring one can improve your chances of a successful claim. The benefits of having one by your side throughout the process can truly make the difference between approval and denial of your claim. While you may be uncertain because of financial reasons, it’s important to note that Social Security Disability attorneys do not charge upfront, and only get paid if you win your case.
